Data Center Efficiency Begins With Asset Management

Data center asset management is tricky. At a base level, there are all the boxes and serial numbers, but what about tracking less tangible assets like power? With power being the fastest growing expense in the data center, it makes sense that you should quantify and track it.

Two reasons assets like power and cooling often go untracked are their dynamic nature and their lack of physical presence (out of site, out of mind.)  Viridity EnergyCenter software simplifies management and tracking of power as an asset by measuring consumption at the device level without the need for additional hardware or agents.

Although not primarily designed for asset management, Viridity EnergyCenter offers several benefits in this area and many smaller data centers have told us it is the right size solution for their needs. With the software, you can:

-       Map your data center - Simple drag and drop interface allows you to build a map of your data center room layout including architectural elements such as walls, windows, vents, and doors.  You can also add your IT equipment including:  racks, servers, storage arrays, switches, PDUs, air conditioners, branch circuit monitors.

-       Inventory your assets – Discover all of the networked IT equipment in your data center down to the component level.  Asset information includes serial number, network address, operating system, processors, form factor, weight, model, and manufacturer.

-       Get actionable information - Reporting of power and utilization at the device, rack, and data center level is automatic. You’ll get an immediate understanding of where the top power consumers are and which underutilized servers are consolidation or retirement candidates.

Once you have accounted for all of your network discoverable IT equipment and less-tangible assets like power and cooling, you can supplement with an EAM to assist with tracking the non-discoverable data center assets. To learn more about Viridity’s EnergyCenter visit our products page.
